About the Area of Refuge Sign
An area of refuge (or, in buildings with sprinklers where the code allows, an area for assisted rescue) is a protected place where someone who can't use the stairs waits for help during an evacuation. The 2010 ADA Standards (§216.4.2, §216.4.3) and the International Building Code (IBC 1009.9–1009.11) call for three kinds of sign: a tactile sign at the door that reads AREA OF REFUGE or AREA FOR ASSISTED RESCUE with the International Symbol of Accessibility; directional signs with the symbol pointing the way where the area isn't obvious; and instructions posted in the area telling people to use the stairs if they can and explaining the two-way communication system. Edit the instructions to match your building's system and evacuation plan.
