About the Tactile Exit Sign

Doors to an exit stair, an exit passageway or the outside carry a tactile sign (ADA §216.4.1, IBC 1013.4) with the wording the building code assigns: EXIT, EXIT ROUTE, EXIT STAIR DOWN, EXIT STAIR UP, EXIT RAMP DOWN, EXIT RAMP UP or TO EXIT. Raised characters and Grade 2 braille, laid out like a room sign. These are the tactile companions to — not replacements for — illuminated exit signs.
